Filling The Gap: Implementing Support for Suicide Caregivers (Webinar)

October 4, 2022 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Tuesday, October 4, 2022, 3:00pm-6:00pm (PT)

Hosted by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) New York City Chapter. This workshop introduces a first-of-its-kind support model for suicide caregivers. A suicide caregiver is defined as someone caring for an individual who is thinking about suicide or exhibiting suicidal behaviors. Given the stressful nature of caregiving and the lack of existing services, it is crucial to consider this population’s unique needs. Furthermore, effective support from a loved one has been shown to reduce suicide risk.

Derived from research in caregiver family therapy, suicide bereavement support, and peer programs, the Suicide Caregiver Support Model takes a holistic approach. By pairing psychoeducation around suicide with a self-care system, social workers can effectively empower caregivers to provide support as well as sustain their own wellness. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be equipped with practical tools for the implementation of supportive resources for suicide caregivers in both community and individual settings. 3 CEUs are available.

With this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define the role of a suicide caregiver and identify the need to incorporate care for this population in social work practice
  • Identify the components of the Suicide Caregiver Support Model and the research behind its effectiveness
  • Utilize practical tools and exercises to support suicide caregivers
  • Discuss ways to effectively manage challenges when working with suicide caregivers

Cost: $54-$81. Registration and more information here.
